Whether you're a seasoned backpacker or just starting to explore the joys of hiking, the LSHT offers something for everyone. Our Foundation was formed to make sure this trail stays open, maintained, and protected for future generations.

Come for nature. Stay for the community. Leave a legacy by helping us care for this beloved Texas treasure.

The Lone Star Hiking Trail Foundation

LSHTF exists to support and promote the Lone Star Hiking Trail and the mission of the Lone Star Hiking Trail Club. Together our work is rooted in education, conservation, and community engagement to ensure this special trail continues to thrive for generations to come. Here’s how we make an impact:

≫ Educating the Public – We share knowledge about the location, use, and care of hiking trails in Texas, with a special focus on the Lone Star Hiking Trail.
≫ Supporting the U.S. Forest Service – Our volunteers regularly assist with trail maintenance and conservation efforts in partnership with the Forest Service.
≫ Providing Online Resources – We maintain helpful online content for hikers and volunteers, including maps, trail updates, and guidance for trail care.
≫ Growing with the Trail – We adapt our programs as needed to meet the evolving needs of trail building, maintenance, and public engagement.

The Lone Star Hiking Trail

LSHT winds through the beautiful woodlands of Sam Houston National Forest, offering over 100 miles of natural beauty and outdoor adventure. Open year-round and free to the public, the trail is a haven for:

≫ Nature study & environmental education
≫ Wildlife observation & birding
≫ Day hikes, long-distance treks & backpacking
≫ Trail running & primitive camping
≫ Quiet reflection & peaceful time in nature

Whether you're looking for solitude, exercise, or a deeper connection to the natural world, the Lone Star Hiking Trail welcomes you.

History of the Foundation

Mission and Values

Community Partners

The Lone Star Hiking Trail has been connecting Texans with nature since 1972. Originally planned and built by volunteers with the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club, the trail grew over the years into a 96-mile path winding through the Sam Houston National Forest.

In 2023, recognizing the need for long-term sustainability and care, the Lone Star Hiking Trail Foundation was created to ensure ongoing funding and stewardship of the trail.

Our Mission:
To preserve, protect, and promote the Lone Star Hiking Trail through stewardship, education, and community engagement.

Our Values:
≫ Stewardship: We care deeply for the land and believe in giving back to it.
≫ Availability: The trail should be open and welcoming to all hikers.
≫
Community: Our strength lies in the people who hike, support, and care for the LSHT.
≫
Sustainability: We aim to create long-term solutions for trail maintenance and preservation.

We couldn’t do this without the generous support of our partners. Thank you to the local businesses, outdoor groups, conservation organizations, and agencies who are committed to helping protect and preserve the Lone Star Hiking Trail.

≫ We’re currently building our community partner network and look forward to showcasing those who share our passion for the trail and the outdoors.
